Project end

Today marks the official end of WATERISKULT, which has been "celebrated" with a talk for the annual meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists in Rome. With the last MES tests in the lab nearly come to an end, the next months will be dedicated to the preparation of the full articles containing all results from the project. A list will be kept updated on the "Publications" page. Cheers!

Research visit in the UK

I am currently in Yorkshire, England visiting the University of Hull for a couple of months for a laboratory experimentation in collaboration with Dr. Stuart McLelland. We are recreating the high-intensity water currents developing in oceans during extreme weather events and investigating their effects on historical materials in a flume. Check this video out!

More trips, more dives

It is a period full of travels and hours spent underwater. Other than going back to Ischia in southern Italy for the first monitoring step of our UESs, I joined a campaign of underwater archaeological excavations in Anse des Laurons in southern France, with the support of the DRASSM (Department of Underwater Archaeological Research). Now I am in Limassol, southern Cyprus, about to start the underwater survey and sampling in the ancient port of Amathus, with the support of the University of Cyprus. More shots of my Mediterranean dives coming soon!

Dissemination weeks

The last weeks were dedicated to disseminating WATERISKULT's outline and first findings to the scientific community. I was a poster presenter at the 12th AIAr Conference in Italy, then at the EGU General Assembly in Austria, and finally an invited speaker at the JpGU Meeting in Japan. I was also convener of the session "Cultural heritage and the environment: interaction, vulnerability, past and future changes" at EGU.

Fieldwork in Italy

The underwater fieldwork officially began in the last weeks. We scuba dove in the winter-cold waters of the Gulf of Naples in southern Italy, moving from the Roman archaeological site of Baia to the island of Ischia. The activities involved the sampling of archaeological materials, with the collaboration of Parco Archeologico Campi Flegrei and Centro Sub Pozzuoli, and the installation of our UESs ("Underwater Exposure Setups"), with the collaboration of Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn.

Science4Teens project

Shooting for the project Science4Teens by the International Research Office of the University of Padova is starting. The project aims at communicating the up-to-date academic research carried out by MSCA fellows to high school students. I will soon appear in one of the videos being produced, talking about the impact of climate change on cultural heritage. Take a look at the first pics on Facebook
